DIY Corset Pattern Draft Metric 👗📐 | Make your own Perfect Fit Corset Using Your Bodice Block Sloper
An electric carving knife -either no longer in food service or purchased specifically for craft use, like from a thrift store-is perfect for carving cured foam! Many avid cosplayers, propmakers, and production designers keep one in their kit. I’ve also seen them used to carve out special backgrounds from expanding foam for pet enclosures, from reptile vivariums to cat houses and trompe l'oeil home decor. I’d bet you would find 101 uses in your adventurous millinery!
Thank you so much! What a great idea! I will keep this in mind 😊
I have you in South Africa. Where did you buy the flower tools. Could you give a link to the Lily of the valley? Thanks Mimi
I'm in love with ur blouse❤ Did u sew it urself or bought it ? If so please drop the link 😊 Thank you for this informative video
I think that everyone should have their own choice of hat. Some are amazing but other than that they are FUN. Get out of your strait jacket!
This is so helpful, this is my body type and I do struggle with commercial clothes. Thank you for sharing this valuable information in such detail
Very helpful video. Thank you. I have never added the soda ash to the dye bath. I use the soda ash to pretreat the fibre and I've had some rather vibrant results. However, I wasn't using it for millinery but for a jewellery piece. I painted the dye onto the prepared fabric that I had gathered into pleats and tied around a vase I bought for the purpose. I wanted the dyes I prepared to both stand alone and in selected parts to gently blend with others on the damp fabric. I must admit, painting the dye onto the fabric was rather fun. Once it was dried, I sewed it onto a backing with D rings either side. I was able to choose all kinds of things to create the neck ribbom and fastenings. I was quite pleased with the result and am thinking about other pieces I can make using the same technique. I hope that made sense. 😊
I forgot to say, congratulations to you and Mr. Hat for the upcoming arrival of Little Baby Beret! I am so happy for you both. God bless, Sr. K
Nice.
very 1930s!
I collect and refurbish antique and vintage sewing machines. Many times when someone says the machine doesn't sew, it's because it's packed with lint, wound up threads, and filth around the shuttle and bobbin case. Your Frister & Rossman is very similar to my1 980 Necchi--an Asian-made class 15 machine. A real workhorse, easy to service and repair, and among the last of the mostly metal machines.
This is a Great Idea! Thank you! Also, you look very pretty in the vintage print dress. Just as pretty as one of my favorite TV/film stars, Mary Tyler Moore!❤
Fantastic info! though I have a question for anyone who sees it! I was gifted some hat heads which lead me to learning millinery and some of them appear to be balsa wood. Does anyone have experience trying to rehydrate balsa wood hat heads? Theyre delicate, so im hesitant to get to experimental.
Hello, I haven't worked with balsa wood heads. I use mineral oil (like you would on a wooden chopping board) on my hat blocks once a year to keep them hydrated. I buy my mineral chopping board oil from IKEA. Just make sure the oil is fully absorbed before using the heads. I usually leave my blocks to dry for 1 week just to be sure!
Did you know that "Ilona Millinery" images come up when you insert online images and search "pillbox hats" in MSWORD? I sincerely hope MICROSOFT asked your permission and compensated you for the use of your company's images.😊
thank you for video🙂 , can I also apply it on rabbit and beaver felt?
Yes! But have a look at my updated video on a better method to apply this stiffener first: ruclips.net/video/7EQL2EW_8mw/видео.html
What did milliners use before cling film was invented?
Possibly tin foil. But back in the days before cling film was invented, hats tended to be softer and not stiffened as hard as we like them now. The clingflilm prevents the sticky residue from stiffeners to the block.
I wonder if using a brush after adding starch to brush off the excess would help with it getting stuck.
To sell that many hats should be considered a great success. Your hats are beautiful, but people don't realise how difficult it is to sell something. I think your hard work (not forgetting Mr Hat) really paid off. Congratulations 😊
I am impressed that you put yourself "out there," and file your experience under "learning." I know how much hard work goes into such events, and the cost of the table can be stressful. I know from experience (I do other art and crafts work professionally, and I am learning millinery since you inspired me!) that very few people are prepared to do what you, with trusty Mr Hat, are doing. I know your hard work ethic and willingness to learn will pay off in the end.
Hi I would like to learn how to make berets
Thanks so much for your lessons.
Many congratulations Ilona, wonderful news. I enjoy all your videos thank you for reviving my interest in millinery
You had me at 'metric'. 😊
I love this. I have a little collection of thrifted hats that need some love to make them look vintage. This gives me confidence to just try! Now you need a 30s suit to complete the lady journalist look! ❤
This is awesome! I bought some silk velvet that will be great for a version of this!
I love the veiling, it just makes it more formal I feel. I love your channel!
Ilona I just love your channel 💜💜💜💜💜💜
I love the little scone conversation at the end. I love your videos! I’d love to see you make a plait hat. I regret not buying a vintage 40s red straw chimney hat on eBay and now I need to learn to make it haha
This was an amazing video! It’s weirdly exactly what I need because I ordered a plain straw hat I want to dye red. Thanks so much. And I love your style!
This was fun, thank you! Definitely some interesting headwear to wear to the races. My favorite was Cherry on Top it's stunning. The avant-garde sculpture one was absurd, and I wasn't fond of the one shaped like a top hat either. It looked like something from Cabaret.
Your videos are so informative and a pleasure to watch!
I agree with everything you said about dress codes and accessibility.☺ Dress codes are a part of what makes these events special.🌹
The shoulder gathering call out is so on point. The male model is shown in a plain white button up - but the female model is implied to be nude??
I'm sorry, but I'm going nuts 🙄 I have tried everywhere to find the cord that is used for hat blocking. Do you have any idea where I could get some from and what exactly it is called? I have tried everywhere, but no joy. I am about ready to jump out of the window. Actually, that is a bit over dramatic as I live in a bungalow, so if I were to jump out of said window I would land in 2 seconds in a colourful fluffy bush. However, I feel my need to be over dramatic is absolutely justified given my hours spent trying to find the stuff. Anyway, I'm in no danger but think of the poor bush 😂😂😂
I just use paracord, you can buy rolls of it on Amazon. Just tie a loop knot in the end and you are good to go.
@ByIlonaMillinery Bless you for taking the time to advise. I should tell you that I have been a subscriber for a long time. I haven't simply enjoyed your content, I have been inspired by you to try my hand at milinary. I do other crafts professionally, but I didn't have the confidence to try my hand at hat making. Watching your videos with such clear instructions changed all that. I am also impressed that you have the humility to admit when you've made a mistake. Anyone who works in craft knows that mistakes are part of the process. They can prove very instructive in themselves. I always tell people who are setting out to learn a craft that they should "prepare to be rubbish." They sort of look puzzled until I go on to explain that people have a terrible fear of being rubbish. Accepting that this is a natural part of the learning process kicks that fear to the kerb. Many people teaching on RUclips have perhaps studied at college, and some have been doing the craft for decades. Sadly, some edit out all mistakes. I have even caught sight of a smidge of Photoshop...I don't feel that to be very helpful. I once knew a man (OK, I was married to him. I was just too embarrassed to mention it 🤣) He had not studied or ever done any photography, but his business was to take him to Australia, so he went out and bought £1,000 of camera equipment. When the photographs didn't turn out like something out of National Geographic, he never picked up a camera again. Sheesh. 🤦♀️ Anyway, thank you for being so inspiring and helpful. I should also thank you for saving the beautiful bush outside my window from being squished as I threw myself in. Paracord, it is then 🙂
Wonderful video, but I tell you that Elizabeth's BLUE dress at weddings gave misfortune omens as Anne's , Charles', and Andrew's marriages ended in divorce. Queen Liz got advised to wear different colors at William's & Harry's weddings as They are fine. Never wear BLUE in any shades at wedding.
Ver interesting video 👏. Thank you for the helpful commentaries 🤩🥰🙏🏻
Hi, there a tutorial on how to make the middle part. Do you have a tutorial on a half hat? I'm interested in making a half hat because I'm not finding a base... I would appreciate how help... I live in Florida. Thanks so much...
Ss far I have bought two hand steamers neither of which work. I took a peek at some feedback and one that just made a weirdly thumping noice with no steam seemed a common esperience. I am currently waiting to buy my next waste of money 🤦♀️ Anyone who has a tip on a brand of hand held steamer that actually works would be considered a genius human being by yours truly 😊
Hello, I cannot recommend a specific brand of steamer, as I usually buy mine off Amazon, and they are typically white label products where the brand name constantly changes. My best advice (if buying off Amazon) is to find the steamer with the most reviews-there is one currently in the UK Amazon with 9,000. The brand is BEAUTURAL - but I cannot specifically recommend it as it is not one that I have personally used. You can see me using my hand held steamer to shape this straw hat from my latest video: ruclips.net/video/ThRuxGjNA8s/видео.html
@@ByIlonaMillinery Thank you for taking the time to offer advice. I shall watch the video and nip off to Amazon .👌
💥💥
Very good details! I appreciate your great teaching skills!!
I love how you demonstrate how you take the measurements. Never seen such a detailed tutorial. Thank you.
This is terrific 👏. Thank you 😊, ladies.
Cecile a Facebook Friend always looks amazing 💜😈💜 You all look amazing too 💜🌹💜
Thoroughly enjoyed your video and the well thought out commentary, well done 👏👏👏
Hi there Ilona, I could really do some advice regarding the best type of hat for plus size ladies. Do you think you could do a tutorial to give us an idea what we should be wearing? Congratulations on baby hat xx
I do not have the body type you are talking about, but i love listening to you, so i am happily watching this video. 😂😂
Extra36 stifner,? From where it could be bought?
All the information is in this video: ruclips.net/video/7EQL2EW_8mw/видео.html
Where do you get the galvanised wire? ❤
Garden centers are a good place to start. Or try hardware shops, and failing that, just search for it on Amazon.
@@ByIlonaMillinery brilliant, thanks!
@ByIlonaMillinery me again 😅 can you please give me any more info on the wire you buy? I had a heated argument with a length of proper cotton wrapped millinery wire yesterday. I think I won said argument...eventually...with the help of my dad and 2 pairs of pliers 😑 thanks! ♥️♥️♥️
@@swilson3354 Hello, if it is propper millinery wire, it won't make a difference where you buy it from. I use 1mm or 1.2mm thickness depending on the hat it is for. Working with wire is surprisingly hard and fiddly, and it just takes time and practice to master it. The most important thing is to straighten or flatten it so that it doesn't "ping" out anywhere and cause injury. It does sound like you might need a new pair of pliers though!
@ByIlonaMillinery thank you! Haha the pliers survived. The hat so wonky that I think I'll have to take it apart. Think I need another layer of sinamay anyway. Looks too translucent for my taste! Awhh well. You live and learn! Xx
Did you make the base on these? If so is there a tutorial on them?
Never worked with buckram before and I would like to make a half hat fascinator and I'm not finding a base one. Can I make the base out of this? Can you put the buckram in water and let it sit to get hard?
Hi there! You cannot put buckram in water - the stiffener that makes it hold it's shape will dissolve. This is precisely why I use steam to shape it rather than water from a spray bottle.
I heard that nothing interesting ever happens to a person wearing brown !
